Histotechnician Certificate

Overview

The SUNY Cobleskill Histotechnician Certificate program helps fill a rapidly expanding medical laboratory health field that is growing exponentially. There are multiple openings throughout New York State for these laboratory health professionals. Histotechnicians are highly trained members of the Anatomic Laboratory and Histopathology. Under the supervision of a Pathologist, a Histotechnician performs all tasks related to the preparation of Histopathologic slides for microscopic examination and disease diagnosis by the licensed Pathologist.

The certificate is designed for individuals with an associate’s or bachelor’s degree and prerequisite courses, to complete the specialized Histotechnician coursework and clinical experience to become eligible for the American Society for Clinical Pathology – Histotechnician examination. The program offers the core coursework in two full-time semesters culminating with a summer clinical rotation. The rotation is a 400-hour clinical experience perfecting skills in an approved hospital, pharmaceutical, reference, or veterinarian histology lab. Successful students will be eligible for the American Society for Clinical Pathology – Histotechnician examination which ultimately grants national certification and New York State licensure.
